- Martinus Hoagland was born October 27, 1716 at "The Flatlands, Long Island", one of the original five Dutch settlement towns now known as Brooklyn, NY. He was the s/o Harmanus Hooglandt (1681-1771) and Adriana Stoothoff (1687-1761), and the grandson of Christoffel "Stoffel" Hooglandt(1634-1684), the progenitor of this Dutch family in America.
He and wife Annatje were parents to three children: Harmanus (1750), Elsie and John (1761). He settled in Somerset County, NJ at age 24. His 120-acre farm, near the south branch of the Raritan River, was at Flagtown in Hillsborough Twnshp. It adjoined the farms of his brother Harmanus (1725-1806) and his nephew Christopher Hoagland (1746-1822).
He was an elder at the Neshanic Reformed Church in Hillsborough, which is the oldest church in NJ that's still in continuous use for it's original purpose. His uncle Christopher Hooglandt was of the Griggstown/Belle Mead, NJ branch of the family, whose homestead was on the west side of the Millstone River.
Martin died March 4, 1804 and was buried in the family cemetery on the farm, in the Flagtown section of Hillsborough Twnshp. Photo requests cannot be fulfilled because the cemetery no longer exists.
