- LOWER - Leander Firestone Lower was a sheriff of Whitley County in 1884 and re-elected in 1886. He was born in Columbiana County, Ohio on July 8, 1849 and died on September 16, 1921 in Whitley County. He was the son of John Lower and Nancy Anne Firestone. Nancy Anne Firestone's parents were John B. Firestone and Rachel Roller. This Firestone family was most noted for their work making rubber tires. The Firestones originally came to the USA from Berg, Austria. Their Austrian name was "Feurstien." As the Firestones zig-zagged across Maryland, Pennsylvania and Ohio, they intermarried with names like Beaver and Nunnenmacher. The Roller family of Pennsylvania were a patriotic group since Rachel's father and uncles all participated in the Revolutionary War. As the Roller family moved westward, they married into families with names like Funk, Hammer, Nisslin and Rose.
