- "Lambert Watkins, a well known citizen of Martin's Ferry, died yesterday morning at his residence in the West End, after a lingering illness. He was born at Mt.Pleasant, this state, [incorrect] and was eighty-two years old. He was a school teacher in his younger days and came to Martin's Ferry from Bridgeport many years ago with his daughter,Miss Amanda [sic], who had lived with him up to the time of his death. The deceased was a Mason, and an uncle of Mr. Joseph Gill, the well known glass manufacturer of Steubenville. He was the father of Rev. Mr. Watkins formerly of Wheeling, Mrs. Hill of Valley Grove, W. Va., and Miss Amelia Watkins. The funeral will take place today at 2 o'clock under the auspices of Ohio City Lodge F. and A.M."

"Never comfortable with the practice of slavery, the Quaker population of Sussex nestled along Seacock Swamp and its vicinity decided to remove to free territory after 1820. One of them, John W. Watkins, served as county surveyor from 1817 to 1830. He sold his plantation in Sussex in 1829. ... The destination for most of the former masters and their freed chattels was Jefferson County, Ohio, where Watkins died in 1851."
