Notes |
- On the birth records he appears as Hans Jacob, but, as was the custom, used only the name Jacob.
Hans Jacob Schiferli (Schifferly) was born in Tegerfelden, Aargau, Switzerland, the son of Johannes Schiferli and Barbara Hauenstein Schiferli, on 25 Aug, 1782. He married a cousin, Barbara Schiferli, and had three children: Johann Jacob, Barbara, and Johannes, all of whom were born in Tegerfelden. The whole family emigrated from Tegerfelden and arrived in New York City on 28 Jun 1833. From New York they traveled west eventually settling in the then untamed frontier of northwestern Ohio. They cleared the land for farming and settled there. Not only were Hans and his wife born only months apart in 1782, but they died only months apart in 1861.Â
