- "[John White Watkins] taught school in his younger days and was elected County Surveyor, in which position he served for over twenty years. [John and his wife, Elizabeth Johnson Watkins,] then came to Mt. Pleasant, Jefferson County, Ohio, in 1831, and for some time engaged in the mercantile business. He was soon after chosen President of the Bank at that place, retaining that position for many years, and also served as a director of the same. They had ten children, five of whom survived [in 1880]: Lambert, Angeline, William, Elizabeth and Lydia. Both [John and Elizabeth] were members of the Friends' Church.

"Never comfortable with the practice of slavery, the Quaker population of Sussex nestled along Seacock Swamp and its vicinity decided to remove to free territory after 1820. One of them, John W. Watkins, served as county surveyor from 1817 to 1830. He sold his plantation in Sussex in 1829. ... The destination for most of the former masters and their freed chattels was Jefferson County, Ohio, where Watkins died in 1851."
