- Eugene D. Stokes, 78, of Terre Haute died Tuesday, Feb. 7, 2006, in Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, from complications resulting from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. He was a business man in Terre Haute for many years. He was born March 1, 1927, in Terre Haute to Albert and Catherine Stokes.
Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Sally Dill Stokes; six children, Debra Kelsheimer and husband Terry, C. Howard, Todd B. and his wife Freda, Gregory E., Catherine S. Wilke and husband Scott, and Millie D. Simplis and husband Vance; one sister, Betty Kennedy and husband Robert S.; one brother, Granville; 10 grandchildren; three stepgrandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one daughter, Trudi Lynn; two sisters, Virginia Whitehead and Adeline Cash; and one brother, Jefferson A. Stokes.
He was a 1945 graduate of Garfield High School and was in the US. Navy from 1945 to 1946. He went to work for the Ohio Oil Co., in 1948, transferring to Vincennes, Evansville, and then to Lansing, Mich., and returning to Terre Haute in 1960. From 1961 to 1974 he worked for Sears & Roebuck, Allstate Insurance, Sterling Brewing Co., and was co-owner of Twelve Points Hotel. He then was an area manager and sales representative for Miller Brewing until his retirement in 1988. He opened a business, Creative Crafts, now named The Golden Frame, and owned by his son, Todd. He was a member of Grand Lodge 19 Free & Accepted Masons, Scottish Rite, Zorah Shrine and Post 90 American Legion in Marshall, Ill., and is currently a member of Maple Avenue United Methodist Church.
