"Never comfortable with the practice of slavery, the Quaker population of Sussex nestled along Seacock Swamp and its vicinity decided to remove to free territory after 1820. One of them, John W. Watkins, served as county surveyor from 1817 to 1830. He sold his plantation in Sussex in 1829. ... The destination for most of the former masters and their freed chattels was Jefferson County, Ohio, where Watkins died in 1851."
