Notes |
- Harriet Hadley Johnson had more than just a long family history in Redlands - her ancestors can be traced to the signers of the Magna Carta in 1215.
The lifetime resident died Sept. 3 at Kaiser Permanente Medical Center in Fontana.. She was 87.
She was born April 25, 1918, in Redlands, where she also grew up.
Johnson attended Kingsbury Elementary, Redlands Junior High and Redlands High.
At Redlands High, Johnson was a member of the Scholarship Association and Girl's Athletic Association. She graduated in 1936.
After high school, Johnson earned her Associate's Degree from San Bernardino Valley College & earned her Bachlor's Degree in French from UCLA.
She married Eugene "Gene" Johnson in 1940 and began raising children.
She was active with her children in several organizations, including Cub Scouts and Boy Scouts. With the Girl Scouts, Johnson rose through the different levels of the scouts as her daughters progressed from Brownies through Senior Girl Scouts. She served as a den mother for her son in the Boy Scouts.
Johnson also was interested in her family history - not just her family history in Redlands but as far back as she could go.
Through her interest in her genealogy, Johnson was able to trace her roots through the American Revolutionary War, across the Atlantic Ocean aboard the Mayflower and all the way back to 1215 at the signing of the Magna Carta, an early document allowing civil liberties to the English people.
She was a member of the Daughters of the American Revolution, the Mayflower Society and the Dames of the Magna Carta.
Johnson attended the First Congregational Church of Redlands, the church she was baptized in as an infant.
Survivors include her son, Walter Johnson of Redlands: two daughters, Marilyn Williams and Charlette Keel, but of Redlands; six grandchildren; and twelve great-grandchildren.
