- John Carpenter and Neill McGill, two of the Witnesses to the will swore That they and each of them saw John Welling, their Testator, therein named sign and seal the same and heard him publish pronounce and declare the within writing to be his last Will and Testament, and that at the doing thereof the said Testator was of sound and disposing mind and memory as far as these deponents know and as they verily believe that George Hass, the other subscribing Evidence was present at the same time and signed the names as a Witness to the said Will, together with these Deponents in the presence of the said Testator.: John Carpenter, Neill McGill.
John Welling, Esquire, one of the Executors in the within Testament named, being duly sworn on the Holy Evangelist of Almighty God, did depose and say That the within Instrument contains the true Last Will and Testament of John Welling. The Testator therein named so far as he knows and as he verily believes, that he will well and truly perform the same by paying first the debts of the said deceased and then the Legacies in the said Testament specified so far as the Goods, Chattels and credits of the said deceased can thereunto extend, and that he will make a true and perfect and exhibit into the prerogative Offices of New Jersey a true and perfect Inventory of all and singular the Goods, Chattels and Credits of the said deceased that had or shall come to his knowledge or possession or to the possession of any other person or persons for his use and render true and just accounts when thereunto lawfully required. Sworn at Trenton the 14th day of November 1794, Before me, R. Throckmorton, Surgte.
In the Name of God, Amen. I John Welling, Senior of the Township of Hopewell in the County of Hunterdon and Province of New Jersey, being sick and Weak in Body, but of Sound Mind and Memory, blessed be God for his Goodness and Mercy toward me, but considering that all Flesh must Suffer a Change & Yield unto Death when it shall pleae God to Call us thereunto; I have thought good at this time to make my last Will and Testament, and as to that little of this Worldly Estate I enjoy my Will is that the Same be Dispossed of in the manner following
Imprimis, I order all my Just Debts and funeral Expences & Charges to be first Satisfied & paid & that my Burial be performed in a Decent and Christian like manner like manner at the Discretion of my Executors hereafter named.
Item: I Give and Bequeath unto my beloved Wife Hanna the Sum of Three Hundred Pounds to be paid her by my Executors to be at her own Disposal clearly forever, also my Negro Sharper & and the Negro Wench Violet and her child to her her heirs & assigns likewise the One third of my Plantation and two rooms, the East end of my House, the privilegde of the Kitchen During her Natural life.
Item: I Give and Bequeath unto my Grand Daughter Hanna Vancleave the Sum of Four Hundred Pounds _____ to her by my Executors the use of the same to ______ her During her Natural life & after ther Decease to her Heirs.
Item: I give Devise, Bequeath unto my Son, John, the other two thirds of My Plastation and after his Mother’s Decease, the Whole of my Plantation to hold to _____ his Heirs & Assigns Foever.
Item: I give unto my beloved wife Hanna her Riding Chair & Horse to be at her own Disposal Clearly forever..
Item: I give and Bequeath the remaining part of my personal Estate and what Nature Third or Condition Soever the same may be in Whether Money, Goods or Outstanding Debts to my beloved Wife and Son John and Daughter Elizabeth to be equally divided between them that is to each one third, my wife to have her choice of the thirds of the Beds and furniture to be at their own Disposal Clearly forever.
Item: I Constitute and Appoint my Son, John & my Son-in-Law Jacob Carle to be Sole Executors of this my last Will and Testament hereby Revoking all other Wills by me heretofore made. In Wittness whereof I the Said John Welling have hereunto Set my hand and Seal this Twenty fourth day of August in the year of Our Lord One thousand Seven Hundred and Seventy three.
