    Occupation:
In his booklet, True Stories of the Drovers Trail, Floyd Simpson reports that Ignatius Burns and his sons ran a Drovers Station at their farm from 1827 until 1852. A Drovers Station was a farm where Drovers who were driving livestock from Ohio to the market in Baltimore, Maryland could stop for the night. At some Drovers Stations the drovers were able to corral their livestock and then spend the night in "hotel-like" accommodations.

It is recorded that Ignatius Burns' sons, George N. Burns and Townsend Burns, closed their father's estate in April 12, 1852 by sale of a 152 acre tract in Smith Township, Belmont County, OH.

    Buried:
"[Ignatius and Bethsheba's] graves lie alone atop a mound in the middle of an open field with private homes on two sides. I believe it is off of Oak Street outside Bethesda.  One of my relatives, William Burns, I was told is responsible for placing a flag pole and a lovely granite gravestone between the two original headstones. On it, Bathsheba's name is spelled Bethsha."

    ------------------------------------------------------------------

The Cemetery is on his original farm land bought in Goshen Township which is now on private land outside Belmont, Ohio. There are only two markers, but there may be other graves there. The markers are for Ignatius and Bethsheba Burns. It is interesting to note that they sit on a small hill because the farmer who sold the coal mining rites did so saying that they could not mine for coal under the graves. Therefore all the surrounding land collapsed by about 10 feet.

Ignatius and his wife Bethsheba Nichols Burns were both born in Loudoun County, Virginia and were married there about 1802. On Dec 29 1806 a deed of sale was recorded in Goshen Township for 160 acres of land purchased for $440 by Ignatius Byrnes from Sinclair James. In the following years he bought parcels of land scattered along north/south and east/west running roads. They all had water available. This was probably because he and his son Enoch ran Drover Stations along the Drover Road across Belmont County. He became a wealthy farmer and businessman.

Ignatius and Bethsheba had seven children who lived to adulthood. The first two were born in Loudoun Co., Virginia: George Nathan Burns b. 1804-1880 and Enoch Burns b. 1805-1889. The last five were born in Belmont Co., Ohio. They were: Townsend Burns b. 1808-1888; Tamson Burns McKinley b. 1812-1893; Ignatius S. Burns b. 1815-1888; Pleasant Burns Garrett b. 1818-1888; Joseph Burns b. 1819-1880.
