The death certificate of William John Todd says that his parents were Nathaniel Todd and Miss Montgomery.

Birth:
On both the 1880 and 1900 Census the birthplace of William's parents is given as Ireland. It is only on his death certificate that his son, John, lists William's parents as having been born in Scotland.

John Todd's own granddaughter tells that he and her grandmother often argued as to whether the family came from Ireland or Scotland. Of course, history tells us that Scottish Protestants were brought to Northern Ireland to make that a predominantly Protestant area. So it is possible that Nathaniel Todd and his wife "Miss Montgomery" may have been born in Scotland and then migrated on to Northern Ireland where William John Todd was later born?

There is a Jane Todd, age 57, listed with Nathaniel Todd in 1851 in Edwardsburg, Grenville County, Canada. Nathaniel's son's death certificate refers to his mother as "Miss Montgomery". I have chosen to put the two names together as Jane Montgomery; however, this note is meant to be a caveat to anyone seeing this to recognize that this is conjecture on my part.

Subsequently, I found Jane Montgomery Todd, wife of Nathaniel Todd, found on Ancestry.COM on the Christine Cook Family Tree.

Jeff Donnelly found two possibilites for the birth of Jane Montgomery.

1. There was a Jane Montgomery baptized in Southend, Argyll, Scotland in 6/11/1794. Her father was Robert Montgomery.

2. There was a second Jane baptized 10/5/1794 to a David Montgomery in Methven,Perth,Scotland.
